Process Safety Training
Core & Specialist Programmes — Open Enrolment & Corporate Delivery Worldwide
Practitioner-led process safety management training for professionals in oil and gas, chemicals, power generation and other high hazard industries. Our programmes cover process safety management from introductory awareness through to senior leadership accountability, structured around OSHA PSM, the Seveso III Directive, IEC 61882 and the Energy Institute process safety management framework.
Fundamentals of Process Safety Management
A three day foundation programme introducing the principles and practice of process safety management (covering the regulatory framework, HAZOP to IEC 61882:2016, risk assessment methodology and barrier management) for professionals new to the discipline.
Programme Overview
Process safety management is not an advanced specialism reserved for experienced safety professionals. It is a discipline that every engineer, operator and manager working in a high hazard environment needs to understand from the outset of their career. Organisations that fail to build this foundation consistently find that their process safety management systems are technically sophisticated at the top and dangerously thin at the operational level, where the decisions that determine whether barriers hold or fail are actually made. This foundation programme introduces the principles and practice of process safety management to professionals new to the discipline. It provides a solid grounding in the applicable regulatory framework, hazard identification techniques including HAZOP to IEC 61882:2016, risk assessment methodology and barrier management. Participants gain the knowledge to contribute effectively to process safety management activities in their organisation from the moment they complete the programme. The programme is structured to build understanding progressively: from the regulatory context and the nature of major accident hazards, through the identification and assessment of those hazards, to the design and management of the barriers that control them. Real incident case studies are used throughout to ground the methodology in the consequences of failure. Organisations that invest in this foundation programme build a workforce that understands why process safety matters, what their individual contribution to it is, and how to recognise and escalate the early warning signs that precede major events. This is the foundation on which effective process safety culture is built.
Programme Topics
Introduction to process safety: what it is, why it matters, and how it differs from occupational safety
Regulatory framework: applicable major hazard regulations, pressure systems requirements, dangerous substances regulations, health and safety regulator guidance documents and the role of the Competent Authority
Hazard identification techniques: HAZOP (IEC 61882:2016), What-If analysis and checklist reviews
Risk assessment, risk tolerability (the health and safety regulator's Tolerability of Risk framework) and ALARP: principles and practical application
Barrier management, layers of protection (LOPA principles) and bow-tie methodology
Process safety culture, competence management and learning from incidents: the role of the individual
